Lincoln University has recently announced a significant expansion of its workforce training programs, focusing on the critical materials industry. This move is part of a larger regional initiative, the NSF Critical Materials Crossroads Engine project, which aims to reduce the U.S.'s foreign reliance on critical minerals and materials. The project is centered in the Kansas City area and Missouri, and is one of 12 'innovation engines' across the country. The initiative is receiving an initial $15 million for the first two years, with the goal of shifting the production and supply chain of critical minerals back to the U.S. The project is a collaborative effort involving over 260 partners, including Lincoln University, the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), and the University of Missouri. The focus is on producing metals and advanced materials used in batteries, medical devices, aircraft engine parts, semiconductors, and other advanced technologies. The NSF is investing in Lincoln University's Employment Academy, a two-semester online certificate program designed to equip nontraditional students with the education and certificates needed to enter the workforce. The academy will work with industry, community, and higher education partners to create training programs that align with the workforce needs and roles across critical materials-related fields, such as manufacturing, logistics, research, and engineering. One of the key focuses of the academy is the development of an advanced manufacturing track, which will train students for manufacturing roles within the critical materials industry. However, the implementation of this track is expected to begin no earlier than fall 2027, as internship and workforce opportunities need to be coordinated among the project's partners. This collaboration with UMKC is seen as a way to accelerate the academy's vision and help employers build a skilled talent pipeline needed to support one of the nation's fastest-growing industries. The project's success hinges on the ability to create a robust and sustainable workforce, which will be crucial in ensuring the U.S.'s self-sufficiency in critical materials production.
